UNIT 1
LIVING THINGS AND CELLS
In this unit we are going to study the following concepts.
1) Life processes:Nutrition , sensitivy and reproduction
2) The basic unit of life: the cell. Animal and plant cells.
3) Levels of organisation: from cells to organism.
4) The kingdoms of the living things
HERE YOU HAVE THE VOCABULARY YOU HAVE TO LEARN TO UNDERSTAND THE UNIT.
BACTERIA CELL
CELL MEMBRANE OVIPAROUS
CHLOROPLASTS CYTOPLAMS
MEMBRANE MICROSCOPE
MULTICELLULAR NEURON
NUCLEUS NUTRITION
ORGAN ORGANELLE
ORGANISM VIVIPAROUS
REPRODUCTION SENSITIVITY
SYSTEM TISSUE
UNICELLULAR NUTRITION
1) Life processes: There are three life processes that are common to every living thing.
a) Nutrition: It is the process through the living thing get all the elements to be alive such as food, water or air.
b) Sensitivy or interaction: It is the process through we are going to respond to the stimuli from the world using our senses.
c) Reproduction: It is the process through we are able to get offsprings.
2) The cell
The cell is the basic unit of life. All the cells have:
a) Nucleus: Coordinates the functions of the cell. It is the brain of the cell.
b) Citoplasm: It is the liquid that makes up most of the cell. It is mainly water.
c) Organelles: Perform different actions inside the cell.
d) Membrane: Is a layer that protects the cell from the outside.
3)Levels of organisation:
All the multicellular living things are made up of different type of cells. These cells, group up to carry more complex functions.
1) Cell: A specific unit with unique structure. Ex. Neuron
2) Tissue: A group of similar cells with a common function.
3) Organ: A group of tissue with with same function: Ex. A heart
4) System : A group of organs with a common function: Ex. Circulatory system
5) Organism: A complete living thing. A human
4) The kingdoms of the living things
p All the living things can be classified into 5 main groups. The living things in the same group share some common characteristics.
